Recycle like you've never recycled before!
Beginning 11/02/09, you will be able to put cans, glass and mixed paper out at the curb in the SAME recycling bin. And, we will be accepting CARDBOARD again and for the first time, add PLASTIC CONTAINERS to the mix!

If one recycling bin isn't enough to hold everything, just add another container. You may use cardboard boxes, the recycling bins you already have or purchase a new dark-blue recycling can, most of which have a designated recycling logo on them.

The point is, we've listened to you and recycling will become a whole lot easier in Munhall. Here are some of the highlights of the new program:

YOU NO LONGER HAVE TO SORT GLASS, METAL, PAPER AND PLASTIC.

THROW ALL RECYCLABLES IN THE SAME CONTAINER!

USE THE BINS YOU ALREADY HAVE, PROVIDED BY MUNHALL BOROUGH.

USE A CARDBOARD BOX IF YOU WISH.

PURCHASE A NEW DARK-BLUE RECYCLE CAN TO HOLD MORE RECYCLABLES!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is Single-Stream Recyling? What is it all about? How does it all work?

Watch the video below to see what Single-Stream recycling is all about, how it works, and what the advantages are. Please note that the rolling containers you may see in some scenes are NOT used in Munhall Borough. These containers are EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE and we did not want to pass this cost on to you. We will still collect your recyclables curbside and you may use your existing Munhall Borough recycling containers (with recyclables mixed in them now), a cardboard box or a 33-gallon recycling container. We WILL USE a truck similar to those you see in the video (one of our "garbage" style trucks) to collect your recyclables.
Are there any items that cannot be recycled?

Yes. Please CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE SINGLE-STREAM RECYCLING GUIDE.

Will I still have to separate recyclables?

No, for the first time ever, you may co-mingle, or mix, all of the recyclables together in the same container!

Will my recycling pickup date change? Is it still once a month?
No and Yes. Your recycling pickup date will not change. Now that you can use a container (or two) as large as a 33-gallon recycle can to store your recyclables, and are no longer restricted by the small bins we previously used, the collection schedule remains monthly.

Will I really be able to recycle plastics and cardboard? What about phone books?

YES! For the first time, the Borough of Munhall will begin accepting plastics! Download the Single Stream Recycling Guide at the top of this page to find out what types of plastics, and other materials, can be recycled. Yes, we will be accepting cardboard again, so feel free to recycle it. And yes, phone books, long a point of contention, will now be accepted again.

Will you still use the same recycling truck? I heard you might collect materials in a garbage truck. Is this true? Are you really recycling my materials?

No. We will no longer use our small recycling truck (save for those routes where it is impossible to maneuver our larger truck in which case we may use our old recycling truck or we may use one of our pickup trucks to collect recycling on difficult to maneuver routes). It is true, we WILL BE USING A COMPACTING GARBAGE TRUCK to now collect recyclables on MOST ROUTES. Because our new recycling company prefers that we bring in the materials in a compacted format (which is what garbage trucks do) it is better for them and better for us. We can fit much more material in one of our compacting trucks than we can in our recycling truck. AS AN ADDED BENEFIT, YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO CRUSH YOUR CANS OR PLASTIC BOTTLES! YOU CAN PUT THEM DIRECTLY IN YOUR RECYCLING CONTAINER, AS-IS, AND OUR TRUCK WILL TAKE CARE OF THE CRUSHING. Rest assured, we ABSOLUTELY ARE taking your recyclables to our recycler.

Why is the Borough of Munhall making this change? Does it cost the Borough more money?

Without going into too much detail, rest assured that the Borough has always wanted to recycle as much as possible. However, we were previously bound by our agreements with our recyclers to deliver materials to them in a certain manner. Now, with our new recycler, Greenstar North America, they have provided us with a most unique opportunity to take mixed materials (single stream) and materials that our previous recyclers would never accept before, such as plastics. If you really want all the boring details about how this came about, call the Borough Office and ask for Matt Galla, the Assistant Borough Manager, and he'll be glad to tell you all about it! On another note, recycling in the single-stream method, using one of our compaction trucks also has a couple of added side benefits for you: First of all, you do not have to crush your cans and plastics. Secondly, it may help keep solid waste fees in check for a longer period of time than would have been previously possible. Because we pay for EVERY load we take to the landfill, the less we take, the less it costs and that means, your costs for solid waste collection may remain lower than if we had moved to this new program.

In the video, I heard about an "MRF" or Material Recovery Facility. Is there on in our area?

Yes, we are fortunate in the Greater Pittsburgh Area to have a state-of-the-art MRF Center, built and operated by Greenstar North America, that is located on Neville Island.
